1. Responsibilities of the Table Official |
|
The Table Officials are expected to pay 100% attention to the ring they have been in trusted to.
The table Official is expected to be 100% unbiased to each and every competitor
It will be requested of the Table Official to remove or cover clothing that has club logos
• As this adds to the neutral position of you the Table Official
Please note, on completion of the bout the winning competitor is asked to come forward to the table, you are required to have that student come to the table and give you their name. You will not assume, you will not carry name forward until that competitor has stated his/her name
The Table Official will not call remaining time e.g. “10 seconds left” in points or continuous sparring as this could be seen as coaching.
Please remember it is up to us to insure that they the competitor have the fairest competition environment possible.
To insure fairness to our competition we must strive for
• Full attention to the ring we are at
• Full attention to the referees and judges at ring side
• Full attention to each competitor during their bouts
• Full attention to each point being given in points & continuous sparring
• Full attention to each penalty and it’s consequence for the competitor
Don’t be afraid to confirm situations
Don’t be afraid to inform the center referee if he/she has neglected any situation
Be assertive in calling of scores – Kata/ Forms – Demonstration
Be assertive in calling of time
Be assertive in asking for confirmation when needed.
Any problems or questions arising during competition, regarding the running of the table, should be directed to the State Director or “if the state has such a person” the Senior Table Official.
2. TABLE OFFICIALS DUTIES
FOR KATA/FORMS – DEMONSTRATIONS |
|
Please note! 100% ATTENTION is EXPECTED.
It is a test to be seated at one ring and have your sibling or mate participating in another ring and still give 100% of your self to the competitors and fellow officials but we must insist that we have this from you. However if you get the attention of the person coordinating the table officials you will be replaced if and when possible.
PROCEDURES OF KATA/FORMS – DEMONSTRATION
Once the judge has called all competitors to ringside and has verified that all are present, the competition will begin. You will be asked for the first competitors name, at which stage you can call the competitor forward or announce the name loud enough for the center referee to hear and he/she will call the competitor forward. This is best to organize with center referee before the competition begins.
First Competitor
The first competitor has the option of repeating the same form if they choose to, however the Chief Judge will advise this competitor with he/she has placed prior to deciding to repeat their form.
Note: The competitor must repeat the same form and has to accept the final score.
You are required to have the timer going, as the kata/form - is NOT to go –
LESS then 30 SECONDS
MORE then 3 MINUTES
Procedures for time violations are explained under. The scorekeeper
Once competitor has finished his/her form the judge will raise their scorecards.
When they turn their cards to the table, the timekeeper will stand – he/she will proceed to point and call the score of each card – clearly and with the biggest voice you have – starting from left side and proceed clockwise.
Whilst the timekeeper is calling each score the scorekeeper will record each score in the appropriate place on the draw sheet. It is recommended that the scorekeeper take a quick look at scores being called as back up for each other.
Once all scores have been correctly notated, the scorekeeper – using the calculator – will continue to calculate scores as the timekeeper calls forward the next person. It is recommended that the timekeeper using a note pad verify the total reached by the scorekeeper.
The scorekeeper acts under the direction of the ring referee to:
• Ascertain if there are any penalty demerits after each performance
• Record each judges scores correctly, “take a quick look at scores being called by timekeeper”
• To insure correct calculation of scores please use the calculator provided
• Calculate the score for each competitor, “deducting penalties for being under or over time”
Note! The scorekeeper will stand prior to the judging panel awarding the score and will notify the Chief Judge of the actual time violation (over or under the required time).
Draw – Demonstrations or Weaponry
In the event of a draw situation the high/low procedure will define the winner, however if the draw situation cannot be separated by the high/low procedure, the Chief Judge will decide the winner.
The timekeeper acts under the direction of the ring referee to:
• Announce the name of each competitor prior to their performance
• Time each performance, “advising scorekeeper if time violation has occurred”
• Announces any time infringement and the total penalty deduction
• Stands, points to and announces the individual judges scores with accuracy and as audible as possible for the scorekeeper to notate.
Note! Standing and Pointing to each score as you are announcing them gives the referee confirmation by sight that you have recorded all scores, especially helpful when all rings are in full swing and competitors and spectators are showing their appreciation.
Recommended that the total be double checked on a separate piece of paper.

John now has 34.24 and Ben has 34.23. Giving us a winner with the score of 34.24
Re arrangement of competitors
This is not an actual re arrangement. What is actually being asked of you is to go back to the competitors name if he/she is not at ringside when it is their turn to perform. This has been known to happen. The referee will notify you if a competitor is performing in another ring
If you have a NO SHOW it is a good idea to cross not only through the name of that competitor but also through to the area where you would write the awarded scores
3. TABLE OFFICIALS DUTIES FOR POINT SPARRING |
|
PROCEDURES OF POINT SPARRING
Once the judge has called all competitors to ringside and has verified that all are present, the competition will begin. You will be asked for the first competitors, at which stage you can call the first two competitors forward indicating which side each of the competitors are competing from.
John Brown RED SIDE – Ben Drew WHITE SIDE
Table officials are required,
To have a penalty sheet at the ready.
To have the stop watch/ timer set for 2 minutes.
To have the stop watch/ timer counting down the time during the match.
To have total concentration as the scores or warnings are being awarded.
To have the correct draw sheet in front of them during that division
Timekeeper.
The timekeeper will be in charge of the stopwatch/ timer
Time for each bout is 2 minutes.
In case of a drawn bout the stopwatch/ timer will be set back to a full 2 minutes and you will be expected to have clock operating during the extended bout.
The timekeeper will normally stop and start the time only on the command of the referee. However, at certain times the judges or Marshals may delegate for the referee and call for time to be stopped.
Note! Under normal circumstances only the referee may ask time to be stopped. However, the judges and/ or Marshal (or the scorekeeper / timekeeper) may call for time to be stopped if they observe an injury or other incident likely to cause a discontinuity of the time and the referee has not signaled the time keeper to suspend time.
The timekeeper does not suspend time when the referee calls “stop” unless the referee calls “time” at the same time placing his/her hand in a T form towards you the table officials. Timing is always resumed on the command “start”.
When a point is being awarded you are NOT required to STOP time.
At the exact moment time has run out the timekeeper calls “time” and throws the sponge into the ring.
Please note! “You must throw that sponge in while calling time”
The timekeeper will take charge of draw sheet - Calling forward competitors and placing them on their appropriate sides.
Scorekeeper.
The scorekeeper will be in charge of flipping the scorecards as points are awarded.
The only time your hands should come off the scorecards is when you are attending to the notation of warnings or traveling violations
“Please pay attention to the referee while he/she is awarding a point, as the referees have been known to award a point to one side when meaning the other side. While pointing to red side and saying, “white side one point”.
The scorekeeper records all warning and penalties awarded.
When a warning or penalty is being awarded, the referee will bring the competitors back to the center of the ring turn to the offending competitor and place one hand in the other forming an enclosed fist, he/she should be speaking to you informing you of the infringement adding 1ST OFFICIAL WARNING illegal technique. The following procedure is used to record official warnings and traveling violations.
Penalty sheet procedures are as follow
A penalty sheet is required to record any official warning/s
This penalty sheet has an area where the competitor can accumulate three official warnings
First official warning - you will tick whichever “reason box” referee has given as being the competitor’s violation. (Use a pencil with these sheets at this stage due to the fact that if the warnings don’t carry any further then this stage you can then erase mark made and use this sheet for the following bout)
Second official warning - you will tick that same reason or it may be another infringement it does not matter, you are asked to give a point to the other side. Flipping a point over for the other side does this. You will then continue to fill out all details on this sheet as they are kept in case of queries after the match.
Third official warning – for the same or a different violation – Disqualification.
At the top of this same sheet, there is an area where the competitor can accumulate traveling penalties these are different penalties to the above warning violations.
First official warning – first traveling violation, tick appropriate box. (Use a pencil with these sheets at this stage due to the fact that if the warnings don’t carry any further then this stage you can then erase mark made and use this sheet for the following bout)
Second official warning – second traveling violation, tick the other box and award a point to the other side flipping a point over for the other side does this. You will then continue to fill all details on this sheet as they are kept in case of queries after the match.
Third official warning – third travel violation – all boxes ticked equals Disqualification.
The scorekeeper is asked to notify the referee when official warnings add up to a point being awarded to other- side or adds up to a disqualification.
Note! If a competitor is disqualified it is only for that division. Also if they are in a finals bout and are disqualified they will be awarded the lesser of the two positions being fought for.
Draw sheet procedures are as follow
Draw sheet.
Competitors are placed on the draw sheet from their weight and then rank, then against another style if possible.
Can the table official re arrange the draw sheet?
No. The State Directors has the sole authority, unless he/she appoints a Senior Table Official to monitor and amend these draw sheets.
Note: any Table Official experiencing problems within their ring, they will contact the State Director or Senior Table Official for assistance immediately. They will not proceed further with the draw sheet until problem is rectified.
Draw sheet and the correct procedure in the use of these sheets.
1. Draw sheets should have names on each line from top to bottom of sheet – Example page 1
2. If you have say 20 competitors and they are placed on the sheet 8 competitors in the first column and 12 competitors in the next column over, this you see fills the page and enables us to carry each winner forward to 4th – 3rd – 2nd and 1st places.
3. If for some reason you receive a sheet that is not complete you must return it to the computer operator or call on the Head table official to correct it – Example page 2
4. You will begin with the two competitors who are placed at the top of the first column working your way down the list until all competitors have fought. With placing of the winners over into the next column you should now have a full column. You will now go to the top of this column and begin the next round for this division, working your way down to the people who have had one bout already. On completion of that column you will go to the top of the next column and begin eliminations once more until you have a person in the 4th and 3rd place boxes where these competitors will fight off for 3rd place and the competitors who won the two bouts before fight off for 1st and 2nd place.
5. 3 COMPETITORS.
The following is the correct procedure for a division with only three competitors. There are two scenarios in which a division such as this one can be played.
First scenario. Draw sheet, example page 3.
Here competitors will be known as A, B & C
First bout is between A & B. B is the loser, therefore A goes forward on the sheet
Second bout is between B & C. C losers therefore the placing automatically goes
A – 1st place
B – 2nd place
C – 3rd place
Second scenario. Draw sheet, example page 4.
However if the scenario for these three competitors unfolds as follows,
First bout is between A & B. B is the loser, therefore A goes forward on the sheet
Second bout between B & C. B is the loser once again “ B is automatically in third place”
Leaving final to be fought off between A & C. We will say A wins this bout.
A – 1st place
C – 2nd place
B – 3rd place
6 RED SIDE & WHITE SIDE
The draw sheet has two competitors put against each other. The sheet has the competitor one name on top of the other. The name at the top of the pair is placed on the RED side and the name at the bottom of the pair is placed on the WHITE side of the mat. The printout competitor check list, that accompanies the draw sheet which is given to you does not have this information on it therefore it is requested of you to please write next to the name of the competitor which side he/she is meant to be on with an R or a W next to their name. You will find this information on the draw sheet.
The scorekeeper shall notify referee if either competitor achieves
3 – 0 status “at regional tournaments”. Or first to 5 points or the highest of two scores after the 2 minute duration
5 – 0 status “at National tournament”. Or highest of unlimited points scored after a 2 or 3-minute duration.
4. TABLE OFFICIALS DUTIES FOR CONTINUOUS SPARRING |
|
PROCEDURES OF CONTINUOUS SPARRING
Once the judge has called all competitors to ringside and has verified that all are present, the competition will begin. You will be asked for the first competitors, at which stage you can call the first two competitors forward indicating which side each of the competitors are competing from.
John Brown RED SIDE – Ben Drew WHITE SIDE
Table officials are required,
To have the stop watch/ timer set for one minute and thirty seconds.
To have the stop watch/ timer counting down the time during the match.
To have total concentration as warnings are being awarded.
To have the correct draw sheet in front of them during that division
For continuous sparring the ring officials will be situated at each corner furthest away from the table and the senior judge seated directly in front of your table.
The draw sheet is the same as for point sparring.
All procedures in the use of this sheet are as it is for point sparring.
Scoring of a continuous division
On completion of the bout the referee will blow his/her whistle requesting the judges to make their decision.
A second whistle blows to indicate for judges to show their scores to the table.
The two judges furthest from the table will hold their scorecards chest high, the senior judge will have his/her scorecards facing the table over his/her shoulder.
The timekeeper is requested to recite in a clear voice for the scorekeeper, each score awarded.
Example - RED SIDE. 9 – WHITE SIDE. 10 and so on until all three judges scores have been recorded.
Once all scores have been notated it is advisable to inform referee or judge closest to the table of that fact by stating “thank you we have all scores”. This allows the judges to lower their cards while the result is being tallied
The scorekeeper will now tally scores deducting any penalties that may have occurred during the bout, on reaching a total score the Scorekeeper will inform the senior judge if RED side or WHITE side has won or if the bout is a draw. The senior judge will then inform the referee of the outcome.
These awarded points will be recorded on the draw sheet next to each of the competitor’s name.
As shown on page 9.
(As was explained in procedures for point sparring (6). Red side is at the top – White side is on the bottom of the two names).
Timekeeper.
The timekeeper will be in charge of the stop watch/timer
Time for each bout is one minute and thirty seconds.
The timekeeper will normally stop and start the time only on the command of the referee. However, at certain times the judge or marshals may delegate for the referee and call for time to be stopped. Also if it is seen that the judges and referee are negligent in stopping of the clock due to an injury then you may take it upon yourself to stop the clock.
The timekeeper does not suspend time when the referee calls “stop” unless the referee calls “time” at the same time placing his/her hand in a T form towards you the table officials. Timing is always resumed on the command “start”.
At the exact moment time has run out the timekeeper calls “time” and throws the sponge into the ring.
Note! You must call time and throw the sponge into the ring.
If the bout results in a draw then we have what is called an extension bout. You are required to reset the clock for a further one minute only. Unless otherwise advised by the Technical Director or State Director.
During the bout we are required to have the red side/ white side scorecards display any penalties awarded. It will be the responsibility of the timekeeper to flip the appropriate card for the awarded penalty to red side or white side.
Note! If the bout results in a draw and during this bout a competitor or both competitors were awarded a yellow card, a scorecard was flipped for one or both contestants showing the penalty point, which was awarded.
You are now into the extension bout, the scorecards that are already displaying penalties are to remain so if need be they can be added to during the duration of the extended bout.
Scorekeeper.
The scorekeeper is responsible for at the conclusion of the bout to make note of scores being recited by the timekeeper
The scorekeeper is responsible for recording all penalties and warnings issued by the referee
Warnings are awarded to a competitor from the referee.
Yellow Card =1 X equals 1point deduction (a competitor receives four of these yellow cards, equals disqualification)
The referee will bring the competitors back to the center and hold a yellow card to the offending competitor. Indicating to you the scorekeeper to record 1-point deduction.
This is accomplished by placing on the draw sheet next to the offending competitors name, an X = 1-point
Red Card = 2 X’s equals a 2 point deduction (a competitor receives two of these red cards, equals disqualification)
The referee will bring the competitors back to the center. If it is agreed with, the referee will hold the red card to the offending competitor, which indicates a 2-point deduction.
This is accomplished by placing on the draw sheet next to the offending competitors name, XX = 2-point deduction
(A total of four penalty points comprising any combination of yellow and/or red cards earns a disqualification)
The scorekeeper will now tally scores deducting any penalty points that had been awarded during the bout and on completion will inform senior judge who is seated next to the table, of the out come. The senior judge will now inform referee of result by way of hand gesture.
If the bout results in a draw you are required to place new scores on the draw sheet underneath first lot of scores. Take your time here as the sheet can become quite cluttered.

This scenario has our competitors in a draw situation with 25 points each. We will now need to have an extension bout. These scores and penalties are recorded on the bottom line as shown to the left of the page.
Ben (White Side) is eventual winner with 30 points.
Red card violations
Red card is equivalent to XX, 2-point deduction.
If the competitor receives the red card violation twice during his/her bout this equals disqualification.
Or if a competitor has the red card shown to him/her twice, whether this is once in a drawn bout and then again in the extended bout that equals four-point deduction, equals disqualification.
Yellow card violation
Yellow card is equivalent to an X, 1-point deduction.
If the competitor receives the yellow card violation on four separate occasions during his/her bout this equals disqualification. Also if the yellow card is shown to him/her let’s say on three occasions during the bout which ends up a draw and therefore goes into an extension bout and he/she receives another yellow card violation this equals four- point deduction, equals disqualification.
Example 1.
Big Mouth (2nd step) on completion of the first column you will come to the top of this next column. Beginning with Big Mouth (red side) and Go Gong (white side) placing the eventual winner forward on draw sheet.
Example 2.
First scenario. Draw sheet, Example 3.
Here competitors will be known as A, B & C
First bout is between A & B. B is the loser, therefore A goes forward on the sheet
Second bout is between B & C. C losers therefore the placing automatically goes
A – 1st place
B – 2nd place
C – 3rd place

Second scenario. Draw sheet, Example 4.
